With the release of Ignition 8, there have been some questions about how or whether to move existing Vision Module projects over to the new Ignition Perspective Module since there is no automatic conversion or migration option available.
Sales Engineering Manager Kent Melville and Applications Engineer Shay Johnson from Inductive Automation team up to discuss the pros and cons of rebuilding a Vision project in Perspective, offer some time-saving tips for doing this effectively, and answer common questions from users, including:
Can you use Perspective alongside Vision to compliment existing projects?
What are existing elements in Vision that can be carried over into Perspective?
And what features does Perspective have that Vision doesn’t?
And other frequently asked questions
Kent provides an example of recreating Vision forms in the Perspective design environment, gives us a walkthrough of different container types on our demo page that can be used to convert old layouts to new responsive layouts, and tells users where they can find resources to learn even more about Vision and Perspective.

Save major time and effort by building a report in one place and use it over and over.
Parameters determine how to get the data for the report, are used to set values for a report, make a data source dynamic, and allow users to define where they want to get data from.

Animation in an HMI screen can be very appealing, but also very distracting for the operator. In this Webinar clip, Travis Cox, Director of training at Inductive Automation shares guidelines for using graphics and animation in HMIs in a way that highlights abnormal situations, displays the process status, emphasizes important data, and reduces the training time for new hires.

When an operator looks at a display of the current data, they’re only seeing the conditions that exist at that time. In order to manage an operation more effectively, they need more context. That is where trends come in, to help you see where your data is heading.
In this webinar clip, an HMI/SCADA expert from Inductive Automation discusses how trends give the operator access to data before problems happen, and provides a demo of embedded trends in the Ignition Designer.

Increased safety, improved production and profits, and reduced training are just some of the benefits that come from optimizing your HMIs. Displaying data in a practical context- can help the operator assess the situation at a glance.
In this clip, Travis Cox, Director of training at Inductive Automation shares best practices for optimizing your HMIs, providing a demo for moving analog displays and radar charts in Ignition.

Alarm escalation is the ability to see if an alarm notification is sent but not acknowledged, then increase the priority of the notification and re-send it. You can escalate it by type, such as email, SMS, voice, or by sending it to a different person or group. Inductive Automation’s Director of Training Travis Cox demonstrates how to use the alarm escalation software to ensure the proper response without notifying everyone at once.

There are five priority levels for alarms in Ignition. Diagnostic, Low, Medium, High, and Critical. Priorities affect how an alarm appears in an alarm status or how it’s escalated through a pipeline. Travis Cox, Director of Training at Inductive Automation, demonstrates each priority level, their meaning, and when you should use it.

Alarms let you know when something is going wrong in your system. But alarms that are not properly organized can quickly overwhelm the operator. When you have thousands or hundreds of thousands of alarms in your facility, you need to have a hierarchy for filtering alarms. Watch Inductive Automation’s Director of Training Travis Cox demonstrate two effective methods for alarm filtering: by the naming and organizing of tags and folders, and by using associated data.

An easy way to improve the scannability of a screen is with the size of and distance between visual elements. Grouping and spacing elements can make information much easier to interpret.
This webinar clip will provide tips on grouping, labeling, bringing prominence to certain elements, and creating breathing room for the eye so that the user will know in an instant what data is related or most important.

Contrast, and consistency are key components in directing the user’s gaze from element to element. Strong visual hierarchies pull your eye along a designed path. And keeping an interface design consistent, will help the users interaction to be faster and more accurate.
This webinar clip will provide examples and tips on visual hierarchy, icon styling, data formats, calls-to-action, and controlling the balance between more important and less important information.

Our brains work like computers in a lot of ways. We can only process so much data at one time and our eyes look for groupings of elements. Every little bit of extraneous, disorganized information adds to our mental overhead, slowing us down.
This webinar clip shows how removing visual clutter and aligning related elements can ease HMI navigation and help the user find relevant information faster.

People don’t really read a whole lot, they scan. Our eyes jump around a screen looking for the desired information. And if designers don’t lay out the text in an effective way, users may not know where to start making them confused or frustrated.
This webinar clip will provide tips on text alignment, descriptive errors, using natural language, pairing icons with text, visual breaks, and keeping things simple.

Color is a very powerful design tool that must be used in a strategic manner. Colors can be difficult to choose, can easily become an unwanted distraction, and can be relied on too heavily to convey meaning.
This webinar clip will provide some best practices for using color to relay information, draw attention to important elements, and create an emotional impact. This clip also provides resources for color palettes and design inspiration.
